Activities for Disabled
Q.I.P. Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is the only centre in the country identified by MHRD and AICTE for undertaking activities related to Technical Education, Vocational Training and Skill Development of the disabled, in accordance with National Policy on Education, AICTE Act and also the recent Disability Act (1995) passed by the parliament.

This centre has been undertaking various R & D activities, development of educational technology and production of resource material for general and technical education of the deaf. Further, it has organised 4 national conferences/workshops in the area of disability. The faculty of the centre has been involved in evolving a cost effective community based model for quality education and training of the hearing handicapped individuals on modern and scientific lines in the form of Roorkee School for the Deaf located on institute campus. The centre has also helped to develop assistive devices, educational softwares and many other resource material. The faculty of QIP Centre has undertaken 5 research projects and 1 major consultancy project in the area of disability. The centre has helped 9 institute students to finish their M.E./M.Phil/Ph.D. theses in the area related to disability.

The faculty had been involved as experts in the area of disability in various meetings of national importance held by various ministries of Government of India and has so far published 24 research papers in the area of disability.

Prof. S.C. Handa, the Coordiantor of the Centre received the most prestigious 1998 Govt. of India National Award for being the "Best Individual Serving the Disabled" which was given by the Prime Minister of India Sh. Atal Behari Vajpayee. The QIP Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee has thus achieved the distinction of being the unique set up in a Technical Institute undertaking various activities for the disabled, especially R & D and development of Educational Technology.
